Skydiving isn’t just about the exhilarating feeling of a 60-second freefall. People who jump out of perfectly good airplanes are also attracted to the idea of taking calculated risks that push them beyond boundaries of their comfort zone.
No matter whether a seasoned skydiver with thousands of jumps or a first timer visiting Skydive Carolina for a tandem, skydiving can be a safe and liberating activity that reminds us of the importance of taking risks.
Why, you ask? It’s empowering to push against your fear. It’s fulfilling to realize you survived jumping out of an airplane. It’s confidence-building to realize you can set a goal and safely achieve it with adequate preparation.
Skydiving makes us feel alive. And that’s a memorable feeling that can be applied back to our everyday lives, reminding us that we shouldn’t stay in a rut just because it’s comfortable. Pushing past our fears makes us grow into better versions of ourselves.
To a novice skydiver, skydiving may seem flatly a risk. But those who have been around the sport for a while know that skydiving isn’t just about throwing oneself out of a plane willy-nilly and hoping the parachute opens. The parachute will open!
Skydiving is a “calculated risk,” as opposed to just a “risk,” especially given the incredible advancements that have been made with the technology used in skydiving. We trust our equipment, we’ve checked it over and over and over again and we’ve practiced our emergency procedures to make sure we can handle an emergency in the unlikely event that one should happen.
We acknowledge that skydiving can be dangerous, but so can driving a car. In fact, far more people are injured each year driving than they are skydiving.
In 2016, the United States Parachute Association recorded 21 fatal skydiving accidents in the U.S. out of roughly 3.2 million jumps. According to the National Safety Council, a person is much more likely to be killed getting struck by lightning or stung by a bee.
People drive cars despite the risks involved to get from Point A to Point B. People skydive, despite the risks, to feel liberated, to feel completely in the moment for a brief period of time and to get away from the craziness of everyday life.
We wouldn’t be encouraging you to come fly with us if we didn’t think you would benefit immensely from the experience. So take a deep breath and remind yourself that you can handle this.
Only you can set yourself on a path that involves taking the calculated risks that shake-up your life in the best way. If you think skydiving is for you, pick a date, book it, and come experience this incredible sport for yourself. You might be surprised at the stronger, more confident self you become!
